Alternatively, you can save workbooks individually if you know you need to send them to someone with the older version. You can set your workbooks to be saved in this mode all the time, however be aware that you will lose functionality. In later versions, new features keep being added so it becomes necessary to save the workbook in a 2003 friendly way. Specifically, if you are working with someone who is still using Office 2003 then you will have issues because the file format changed with Office 2007 which is the release that followed 2003. When newer versions of Office programs come out, there is new functionality which is not available in the older versions.
